The New Zealand Resilience Trust exists to help local communities to maintain their strength and mana by taking ownership of their problems. We are inspired by those people who do not wait for permission, those who take the initiative in life. We recognise that the most important thing is people. The Trust is about enabling and empowering people to look after themselves and the things that affect their day to day living.

We are not a religious organisation nor do we align ourselves to any particular political viewpoint.

Research on Health and Wellbeing Providers in Newlands

Heather Cotton and Bridie Robins recently undertook interviews with a number of health and wellbeing providers operating in the Newlands area.

The research was designed to develop an understanding of how medical practitioners network with one-another and with the wider community.

The research report is now available to view.  Click HERE to download it.

Managing first aid at events

Organisers of public and sporting events are increasingly providing first aiding staff.

Recent fatalities and serious incidents at public events mean that the benefits of having trained professionals on-site far outweigh the cost.

Accidents are covered in general by the ACC Scheme, but an individual can sue if medical care is not appropriate to the situation or event. Investigations may be carried out by a number of government agencies, including the Police and the Health and Disability Commissioner.

NZRC Emergency Response provides a comprehensive service for event organisers, incorporating everything from undertaking a risk assessment to liaising with Regional Ambulance Communications.

NZRT takes the message overseas

Jarrod Coburn represented the New Zealand Resilience Trust at the World Conference on Disaster Management in Toronto, Canada. The WCDM is an international conference organised by the Canadian Centre for Emergency Preparedness. It is the premier event for disaster management professionals.

The 2009 Conference theme was "A Climate For Change: Communication, Collaboration and Co-operation". This is an especially relevant theme as the world moves more toward resilience - a community-based approach to disaster preparedness.

WCDM delegates are predominantly practitioners from all levels of government and the private sector. The conference offers the New Zealand Resilience Trust an ideal opportunity to network and develop collaborations with academics, researchers, and practitioners.  This year over 2,000 Disaster Management professionals from nearly 40 countries attended.

While in North America Jarrod has met with resilience- and community development professionals in both the USA and Canada.  This was not only an opportunity to promote the New Zealand Resilience Trust, but also to show the world that New Zealand is finally getting 'on board' with the concept of resiliency.
